Advances in technology now make it possible to permanently reduce unwanted body hair from all areas of the body.

IPL hair removal is quick, cost-effective, and easy with proven long-term results.

Recent advances in IPL (Intense pulsed light ) hair removal technology now make it possible to permanently reduce unwanted body hair, quickly and easily, with proven long-term results.

Energi MediSpa chose the Palomar Starlux system because it proved to give better and faster results, less time and minimal discomfort to our clients. Palomar was the first company to develop this light-based technology, they were also the first to receive FDA clearance for permanent hair reduction.

Each of your hair follicles is in one of 3 stages of growth at any given time. The “active growth” (anagen) phase, “regressive” (categen) phase, and “resting” (telogen) phase.

The IPL is most effective at disabling “actively growing” hairs during treatment. It is during anagen that the hair shaft contains the greatest abundance of melanin, the target of the laser light. Many hair follicles are in their resting or regressive stages at any given time. The length of growth cycle also vary slightly by body area. Your treatment plan will be customized to obtain optimal results.

Pre Treatment

  • The area to be treated must be clean-shaven. Unshaven clients will be rescheduled.
  • Avoid UV exposure 7 days prior to your treatment.
  • Clients who are sunburned or tanned must wait 2 weeks before being treated to avoid additional skin damage.
  • Avoid sunless tanning products 7 days prior to your treatment. It is recommended that you exfoliate the area to remove any residual color.
  • Avoid chemical peels and other laser procedures in the area to be treated for 2 weeks prior and two weeks after your laser treatment.
  • Avoid all alpha hydroxy and beta hydroxyl products (AHA/BHA), hydroquinone, retinols/retinoid, Tazorac, and Differin for 7 days before treatment.
  • Clients with any abnormal lesions, moles or spots on the area to be treated must be cleared by a medical practitioner prior to treatment.
  • Clients must stop waxing, tweezing and chemical epilation 3 weeks prior to treatment.
  • If you are prone to cold sores, it is highly recommended to take an anti-viral medication (such as Valtrex) prior to your treatment. Clients with active cold sores will not be treated.

  • If you have Botox or dermal fillers in the area to be treated, wait 14 days both before and after injection to receive treatments.
  • Antibiotics may increase photosensitivity. We recommend that you check with your physician prior to receiving laser treatments if you are taking a long-term antibiotic. If you become ill and begin taking an antibiotic, you will need to be off the medication for 7 days before laser treatment.

Common Questions about IPL Hair Removal

How does IPL differ from conventional lasers?

IPL uses broadband technology to damage hair follicles for long-term hair removal. Unlike conventional laser systems, IPL systems emit light energy in carefully timed bursts to decrease potential damage to surrounding skin and maximize effectiveness. Our IPL hair removal systems emit a broad band spectrum of pulsating light that passes through the skin to the hair follicle where the energy is absorbed by melanin (or pigment) that gives color to the hair shaft. The IPL’s energy is then absorbed by the pigment in the hair and transferred to the surrounding hair follicle. Scientific studies show that the use of targeted, light based energy actually damages or destroys hair follicles at the cellular level, thus the reason IPL is so effective and popular.

What areas can be treated?

IPL hair removal can be performed on almost area of the body for men and women from small areas such as your upper lip, underarms, bikini area, chin, neck, and face, to larger areas such as arms, chest, back, and legs.

Why is laser preferred for hair removal?

Most people are great candidates. Traditional hair removal techniques, such as shaving, plucking and waxing, provide only temporary hair removal. For many years, the only long-lasting hair removal solution was electrolysis which can be time-consuming and is usually limited to small areas, because each hair is treated individually.

IPL hair removal is non-invasive, and safely removes unwanted body hair without damaging the delicate pores and structures of the skin. Facial and bikini area sessions are usually completed in under 20 minutes; legs and larger areas can take longer.

One significant advantage of IPL hair removal treatment is that it affects a large number of hair follicles at once resulting in a quick, more permanent results. As a general rule, several treatments will be required and you can expect to see a 25% reduction in hair growth after just two treatments.

Will IPL hair removal work for me?

The best results have been achieved on dark, coarse hair, but other factors may influence the treatment process, and are generally best evaluated and discussed in person.

Depending on the amount of hair and area treated, the procedure varies from patient to patient. Generally, the treatment will begin by trimming away or shaving the hair above the skin to be treated. Protective glasses will be provided to protect your eyes from the IPL’s bright light. Next, a gel (similar to an ultrasound gel) will be spread over the treatment area. The laser’s handpiece will then be applied to the skin to deliver the pulses of light needed to begin disabling your unwanted hair.

Are there any restrictions on my activity after treatment?

You can return to work or resume most normal activities immediately following your procedure. Hot yoga, steam rooms, hot tubs and extreme exercise should be avoided 24 hours before and after a treatment. Since some redness may occur, you may want to plan your work or social engagements accordingly. This may last from a few minutes to several days depending on the area and your individual skin’s sensitivity.

What precautions should be taken before and after treatment?

You must stop tweezing or waxing your hair for 3 weeks prior for the IPL hair removal to be optimally effective. Together you and our specialist can decide if your expectations will be met and which treatment is the best option for you.

How many treatments will I need?

Hair grows in cycles. The IPL is only effective on hair in its actively growing cycle. At any one time there will only be certain hairs in that growing phase. This means that consistent treatments at appropriate intervals are absolutely necessary for the best possible results. The number of treatments required depends upon your skin, hair coloring, coarseness of the hair and density per treated area.

The IPL hair removal system causes permanent reduction in the number of hairs growing in an area. Clinical studies, which have followed patients for one year after completing two treatments, have shown that reduction in hair growth was stable for the duration of that time. While individual results may vary, patients typically find that it takes 6-10 treatments to get the desired results.

Face and body appointments are spaced differently

As hair on the face tends to grow more quickly than hair on the body, laser hair removal appointments for the face usually start out spaced every 4 weeks and treatments for the body start out spaced every 6 weeks. As you progress through your course you should find that you have less hair growth and the hair that does grow appears more slowly so after your 4th treatment the laser therapist will discuss your results with you and possibly recommend spacing remaining facial appointments 4-6 weeks apart and body appointments 6-8 weeks apart.

Good responders to laser hair removal should see a roughly 10-15% reduction in hair per treatment (hair in the Anagen phase treated on each visit). Most people will go for 6 to 8 treatments per area, possibly more for more resistant areas such as the face or private area. This means that a course of treatments will take anything from 6 to 9 months or more.

How does IPL hair removal compare with other hair removal methods?

Shaving, waxing, and depilatory creams are all temporary methods which must be repeated on a frequent basis. IPL hair removal offers longer lasting results for your hair removal needs.

What does it feel like?

Each pulse, which lasts less than a second, produces a slight tingling feeling or the sensation of being snapped by an elastic band in more sensitive areas.

Is it suitable for everyone?

We customize the treatment to your hair and skin color and type. As long as there is some  pigment in your hair (even blond hair has enough color), then our system will be effective.

What about side effects?

The energies are commonly used in a range of medical and cosmetic procedures that have proven to be safe. Most people experience no side effects at all, though few exhibit some short-term local reddening of the surrounding skin. You can return to most of your regular activities immediately after treatment, although it is advisable to keep the skin protected from exposure to direct sunlight for a short period of time. You should also avoid extreme heat for 24 hours before and after a treatment.
